Who is Athena? The orphan abandoned by her gypsy mother in Transylvania. The child taken to Beirut by her adoptive parents. The clerk working in a large bank in London. The successful real estate agent in Dubai. The priestess of Portobello Road. Athena is the main character in The Witch of Portobello. Her story is told by the people who knew her, amongst them, her adoptive mother, a journalist researching vampirism, a priest, a teacher of calligraphy, and an actress. They each draw a different facet of her character, describing what they saw and experienced as well as their own impressions, beliefs and anxieties.

Well... The Witch... left me an enlightened person from within... it led me to accept myself the way I am... taught me the real meaning of the gifts that the universe bestows upon you... and that if the Mother does choose you.. it is the best to heed her call.. All I want to do is to thank Coelho, for being the teacher...

This is a fabulous book.I really identified with Athena..Though it s true..it imparts a sense of surrealistic beauty to it..very ethereal and at the same time very real!Loved reading it to the core!Wonderful insights in many places and all so true n fantastic.

I read the book in three days, between living my life, couldn't put it down, it was riveting, and I can identify with Athena and her passion for experiencing life to the full, a very clever book that I think I will read again, I'm sure to have missed loads with the speed I read it.

I read this book today. I read it in three days too, despite I had a lot of work this week and the book was in my hands in every free hours. It's a wonderful book and I have no words to describe my emotions after the reading. Thanks, Paulo.

I am from Romania I would say that this book by its main character - a Which born in Transylvania, (north western part of Romania) - is an offense to the image and to the history of my country.
The (bad) surprise was even bigger since Mr. Coelho has visited my country a couple of years ago. And the only thing that he could write about Romania was about a Which - you know, Transylvania the country of witches and vampires - and the Which has to be a gypsy. Even thought the romanian authorities do not fully agree, in Romania there is a serious problem with the gypsy community.
So, Mr Coelho could not be more shallow and "politically" wrong from a my point of view.

Great book, and even though I'm part Roma - "Gypsy" I haven't found this book insulting... I love Athena's passion for life - it's very similar to mine. :)

Finished listening to the audio book yesterday - interesting book - but I still like "The Devil and Miss Pym" more - hence three stars
